Willow Wish is a scholarship fund seeking to make the birth center experience available to any family in Arizona who would choose a birth center setting, regardless of their ability to pay out-of-pocket.
Willow Wish upholds the human and civil rights of birthing people to choose a birth place supported by best evidence regardless of their ability to pay.
Why does providing a birth center option matter?
“The birth center approaches pregnancy and birth as a normal family event until proven otherwise. The program encourages family involvement and provides a safe environment for families to experience the social, emotional, and spiritual renewal inherent in birthing forth new life while attending to the possibility that a problem may arise that will require medical intervention or care in the acute care setting of the hospital. This is in opposition to the view that pregnancy is an illness and birth a medical/surgical event that needs to be cured.” Source: www.birthcenters.org
Providing an evidence-based path for pregnancy and labor care is vital: mothers and babies’ lives depend on it.
A quick look at our statistics in the United States, bearing in mind that 98% of maternity care is still via the obstetrician-hospital birth model:
In the hospital setting, 1 in 3 women (32.8%) is going to experience a cesarean birth. This forever changes the woman’s ability to have control over how she can choose to birth in the future. For the duration of her childbearing years, she will have to negotiate or choose to be out-of-care in order to have autonomy over her body and her birth choices.
The cesarean rate at birth centers is 4.4%. That is a marked difference in outcomes, and literally forever changes the mother’s childbearing years, both from a physical and emotional perspective.
Another fact about out-of-hospital birth choices: they tend to be available only to the economically privileged. It is uncommon for insurance companies to pay for out-of-hospital birth options. Many families are left to pay out-of-pocket or maximize the yearly allowance from their FSA or HSA. The birth-right of a peaceful, empowering, transformational birth for the mother, and a joyful entry into this world for the baby; this is only available if the family can pay the fee for service for their out-of-hospital midwife and/or birth center.
We are committed to making a family’s birth center wish a reality by providing a scholarship fund that is available for families that lack the means to pay out-of-pocket for their birth center experience.
